The Nervous System

Your brain, quietly floating in your skull, appears to be doing nothing, yet it processes billions of bits of information about what’s going on, in and around you at every moment and sends out billions of commands: how fast your heart should beat, maintaining blood pressure, regulating blood chemistry, how far or fast your need to move your limbs, the stomach acid needed for that meal you just had, controlling every glandular and organic function., besides remembering the millions of memories, feelings, moods, emotions and thoughts the make you uniquely you. This is what's called......Life Force in action.

To express itself and control all these functions your brain extends through a hole at the base of your skull as a cable of billions of nerve fibers called the spinal cord. This delicate cord is protected by a 24 strong moveable bones (stacked up like donuts) called spinal vertebrae that have openings on each side at each level to allow for millions of nerve fibers to exit and connect with various organs, glands and tissues all the way down this flexible spinal column.

However, with this flexibility you give up a bit of protection. Your spinal bones may slip out of position and damage or stress the very nerves they are designed to protect. Falls, car jolts, incorrect lifting, repetitive movements, faulty posture and even that explosive cough or sneeze may cause disruption to the normal mechanics of the spine. These areas of abnormal movement or lack of movement are what chiropractors call subluxations. A lack of normal function causes a “dis-ease”. Chiropractors find subluxations which causes this abnormal function; this loss of “ease” inflicting dis-harmony on the body’s Life Force.

Subluxations have several possible components: disrupted joint movement, nerve irritation, muscle spasm or weakness either at the site of the subluxations or along the course of the irritated nerve with associated increased or decreased blood flow in the immediate area. One thing to remember is that subluxations are very common and do not always produce pain or obvious symptoms. Spinal degeneration of the vertebra, joints and ligaments will occur with chronic subluxations. The first sign of pain is usually the tail end of a long standing subluxation complex not the beginning; literally the last straw in a long line of straws on the downward slope to a diseased state.

Your chiropractor is highly trained to be a spinal specialist to analyse the spine for subluxations and, if found, does a special technique called the adjustment which is done by hand. This is nothing like a physiotherapy-type manipulation. Of course this is only after a comprehensive consultation, postural, orthopaedic and neurological testing and most importantly an X-ray exam, not only to evaluate the condition and alignment of the spine but help rule out any underlying disease. We also find that patients love to see what their spinal condition looks like and it helps them take their correction program more seriously.

Once better movement and nerve energy (Life Force) has been restored, you begin to heal yourself!  Now…it is important that it be maintained. The chiropractic profession has been the leader in the field of Wellness Care over the past 50 years. Regular spinal checkups will allow your spine to overcome years of trauma and/or neglect to function optimally, offering your body the best chance of feeling and functioning well. Besides organic & glandular health now new research shows that the Immune System is an actual extension of the nervous system and as such can assure you of a body that will fight any virus, bacteria or other bugs much more effectively than any pill, potion or vaccine. Over 80% of our patients are on regular Wellness visits and can verify that chiropractic “adds life to years and years to life”.  It’s the way the body was meant to be; getting and staying healthy through the direction of the doctor-within-you, better known as your Innate Intelligence......via the nervous system.
